a girl in the world

finding beauty, pleasure and grace on the road less traveled

Maria and I visited Italy for the first time ever this past weekend. She is the perfect travel buddy. So casual, so easy, loves to shop and eat and walk and lounge. We did like the Romans!

hot chocolate and italian coffee for the girls :)

Rome is amazing. I can only describe it as grande. Everything has such grandeur and drama. The marble monument for the unknown soldier managed to take my breath away over and over again (I lost my shoe running across that insane round-a-bout)! We visited the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and of course, the Coliseum. And we spent more time browsing the beautiful shops than we did in museums — which I think is a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon in Rome. We bought fresh roasted chestnuts on the streets and had latte and pasta and gelato all day long. It was as much about the food and the laziness of it all, as it was about the Vatican and the squares and the history of the place.

We took a day trip to Florence and I had nearly forgotten that the David is in Florence! Crazy! Just off Ponte Vechio, we found a small family run leather shop where we bought cute little key chains and coin purses for our girlfriends and mums. And we had the most ginormous scoops of gelato in Florence – and they cost us a whopping 16 euros! That’s like 8 buckets of ice cream!

4 pounds of gelato. medium = freaking huge!

The Vatican was grande. Daunting, a little over-the-top but beautiful. We managed to walk through the Vatican museums and libraries in an hour! Saw the Sistine Chapel and all the other crazy beautiful art there.

The best part of the trip was the free spiritedness of it all. We had no schedules, no plans, no real idea of where we were going to be and when. We would just go to the train station and see where we could go. We’d wander the streets, find little coffee shops around the corner and spend an hour there trying to perfect our Italian.

Mmmm, here is to Italy. La dolce vita!

Oh airports. I’m stuck at Stansted after missing my flight to Rome by FIVE minutes. Actually, I didn’t even miss my flight. I just missed the counter closing by FIVE minutes. These cheap airlines are just crappers in terms of service. The plane is STILL on the GROUND, I can SEE it from the window and you won’t let me on?!?! Ridiculous!!!

Anyway, thank goodness I brought my laptop with me. With the WAN card. Travel in true geekdome. I had myself a delightful airport breakfast of muffin and juice (the staple) and managed to find an electrical outlet to charge my laptop with. I’ve been working working working all afernoon (because there is ALWAYS work to be done)— and essentially am no longer taking this day as a holiday (which works out great). This is the 2nd flight I’ve missed in the last two weeks. The first was with mother last weekend where I (stupidly) brought us to the wrong airport on our way to Prague! That was a VERY expensive mistake. I figure I’ll be more diligent next time. =)

I’m sitting on blue leather airport benches and about half the people around me are sleeping. It brings me great comfort to think that they too have missed their flights and that I’m not the only absentminded, a-little-too-carefree traveler here. To be fair, I didn’t get home from work until 11pm last night. At which point I realized I had left my passport in the photocopier next to the pretty plant on the 5th floor. So decked in my hoodie and glasses, I hopped on a bus at midnight to traverse the underworld of early morning London. Nothing good ever happens on buses past midnight. On the way there, there was a very loud drunk old man calling everyone on his contact list to let them know that he got a new phone. I could not understand a word he was saying but was extremely fascinated by drunken slurring in an English accent. Somehow it still seems more refined than the American version! =) I managed to get home by 1am, made some phone calls, did more work and finally fell asleep at around 4am. So yes, I had an excuse for missing this flight to Rome!

It was a weekend in Prague with Mama this week. She came to London for work and play. We’d work all day and walk, chat, eat all night. It reminded me a lot of our Paris days many summers ago.

Praha had the potential to be a bit of a disaster. Mostly because of me and my absentmindedness. On Friday I took us to the wrong airport! There are four of them in London, all going to the same destinations! Yeesh. We went to Gatwick instead of Heathrow. I couldn’t even believe it. Mum looked like she was ready to kill me and I could not believe I could have been SO stupid! I ended up buying is new flights that left early the next morning. When Mom decided that she was talking to me again, it turned out to be an OK evening.

Saturday morning we were off bright and early. Praha is gorgeous. I can describe it as a child’s birthday cake on steroids. It’s colourful, whimsical, like it came right out of a fairytale. We took a day tour so that we could cover everything in the little time that we had. It is such a fun city to photograph, especially from the clock tower. =)

Another city down in the list of millions of places to see in this great big world!

Thanks Mama! For the company, the patience and the girly time away. I’ve missed it.
