The Bicycle Diaries: From England to India on Two Wheels

I was just talking about doing something this crazy a few weeks ago. This man is planning on cycling from England to India – an even better idea than my plan to drive from London to Sydney!

Why he is doing it:

I wish I could furnish these people with a proper answer as to why, but I can’t. The best I can do is to say that I’ve been to Africa, India, Afghanistan and the Far East, experiences that now appear in the mind’s eye to have lasted far longer than they actually did. They were all times when the colour, contrast and volume controls of life seemed to have been turned up several notches higher than usual. I suppose I want a little bit more of that, just to get it out of my system.

I know already there will be some days when the journey won’t be enjoyable, when tiredness, illness, rudeness or loneliness will get me down. If those days string out one after another with no respite in sight, I’ll hand over my bike to the next seemingly deserving face and head for the nearest airport. But, as I said before, I think the experience is going to be fun, and that travelling at such a slow pace will magnify the adventure.

I don’t think I could do this on a bike but I love his reasoning behind wanting to stimulate the senses and pushing himself through the discomfort of this type of adventure travel. Just great.
