Mothers are amazing people. And mine surprised me today. She defied all of my pre-conceptions about traditional Asian parents and instead provided the kind of understanding and support that blew me away. I’ve been working through some pretty big life decisions lately and when I came to her for some guidance, she listened with an open heart and gave her full blessing and support in whatever path I decide to take. It made me realize that all we really want and need in this world is some empathy and understanding, and tonight, that kind of love came from my mom. And without her knowing it, she liberated me from a million insecurities and she lifted the weight of emotional neediness just by being open and giving enough to react with compassion, as opposed to fear. I know that she deliberately acted against her parental instinct and really made an effort to see things through my eyes and it made all the difference in the world. She set me free from my own fears and infused a strength in me that no one else ever has.
How powerful a parent’s love to their child. Within the course of an afternoon, my mom’s unwavering support lifted me farther than any man’s love or affections ever could. Today, true love came from my mama.
